Hiking & Walks in La Chapelle d’Abondance
You can access the reservation of Mount Grange (2433 m) from the centre of the village and may be fortunate enough to spot some of the local wildlife – chamois, mouflons and marmots make their homes here.
La Chapelle d’Abondance is a village-stage of the “Great Crossing of the Alps” and GR5. The GR5 is a footpath that starts in the Netherlands, crosses Belgium and Luxembourg before crossing France from North to South. It is part of the European walking route E2. This trail is famous for its route through the French Alps from Lake Geneva to Nice and crosses through Mont de Grange and Les Cornettes right by the village.
Suggested Hike: Le sentier Thématique de Perthuis – “Sur les traces du chamois”
A route for all the family through the hunting preserve of the Mont de Grange. Your departure point is the Plan des Feux. Parking is available and you should allow 3 hours to complete the route. A booklet of the route can be purchased from the village Tourist Office for a couple of Euros.
Other hiking and walking routes are available from the Tourist Office in the centre of the village.
Further afield on the edge of St Jean d’Aulps is the Roc d’Enfer (2,243m), a very challenging hike with an altitude gain of 920 metres taking over 6 ½ hours to reach the peaks of the ‘Rock of Hell’. The walk gives amazing views over Mont Blanc and the surrounding area but is on the more demanding end of the scale for the walks on offer in the area, without venturing into routes requiring climbing equipment.
