UK TV Catch-Up for Expats – OVERPLAY comp.
Having moved to France, we still miss some of what UK TV has to offer and want to catch-up on missed episodes of the soaps and other TV. Due to geographical barriers and restrictions, this can been a challenge!!
With the rise of on-demand streaming, tablets and smartphones, we now use the internet more than ever before but streaming I-player and other catch-up TV seems to be an impossible challenge for Expats – until now!
After large amounts of internet research, we have discovered that it is possible to watch these catch-up services using a couple of very clever web companies. We had to piece it together rather than the info being one place, so thought a summary would help!!
Catch-Up UK TV – how to set up
We have had a Samsung smart TV for 6 months now and have been running this solution for over 6 months without fail!
Firstly, Smart DNS, offered by companies such a OverPlay.net allows a simple router or device configuration change. We recommend doing this at ROUTER level so any device accessing the internet router goes through the Smart DNS. This is a great offering for our ski chalet clients!
SmartDNS replicates many of the traditional VPN features, but without the compromise of speed loss. It permits access to restricted websites in different countries without even having to dial a VPN connection. You can make changes on your device, but we suggest all the changes are done at router level so you can just browse as normal without changing all of your device settings.
For Smart DNS to run smoothly it requires a stable IP address. We couldn’t understand why our access kept stopping and our IP address kept changing. It turns out that some internet providers change your IP address monthly, daily or even hourly. If this is the case, then the Smart DNS service will need to be logged in to continuously ensure an uninterrupted service. The way around it is to use a service such as “no-ip“ which can update your authorized SmartDNS address automatically by monitoring for changes to your IP address. Amazing really!!
So it is a simple 2 website process to get UK TV catch up – SMART DNS and NO-IP – see the links below for the services we used.

Holiday was arranged easily with helpful and quick communications at very late notice. We were looked after really well with lots of care and attention. Meals were top class and prepared fresh in a relaxing environment with no short cuts. Biscuits, cakes and hot tubs nice touches and while not much to do in the village there are lovely walks up in to the woods and along the river which were cool. As was the micro brewery bar / restaurant a short stroll away – that was a place with a lot of character and well worth several visits, especially at happy hour.
Flexible transfers to slopes to suit us. Really really went out of their way to help us out when we got caught out and I needed rescuing from Geneva – that was the strongest example of the extra mile they generally go to in order to add personal commitment, show they’re good guys who care about people and value customer service. They run the chalet naturally with this attitude.
“Excellent Hosts and a Beautiful Chalet” – TripAdvisor 2014
I had an amazing time at Chalet le Dragon. Matt and Emma are kind, attentive and accommodating. I was part of a group of 9 who stayed with them for a week. The wine and beverage deal is a must!
I must commend them for the ease with which they hosted 9 people from 8 different countries with 3 completely different ski proficiencies. Matt carried us to and fro with a smile and it was greatly appreciated.
We made full use of the Chalet (game and movie nights, hot tub, and the lovely balconies) and the restaurants that they booked for us in Chappelle d’Abondance were lovely. Matt & Emma, thanks for a lovely vacation!
Chalet Le Dragon is a 5 bedroom, 10 person ski chalet in the Portes du Soleil, France.

Will your French ski chalet minibus driver and vehicle owner have a CPC this season?
Well done to all who passed the June International Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence!!
In time for this coming ski season, as a minibus driver and ski chalet owner, I needed to hold some extra qualifications and to have undertaken some degree of professional training with exams at the end – 4 hours to be precise!
I was locked away for 2 hours every day (including weekends) during May with my study buddy!! I covered topics from Financial Management through to Operator Licences and Marketing, done self test multiple choices and many practice case studies.
Having passed the exam, I can now demonstrate to the French/Swiss authorities that I am professionally competent!!
